Rainbow trouts can be grown in a huge variety of farm conditions and environments. Culturing rainbow trouts in fresh water facilities has spread around the world. Today the rainbow trout is successfully produced in run-through freshwater ponds or race way systems, net cages in lakes as well as intensive recirculated systems.

The plasticity of rainbow trout farming is further emphasized by the adaptability of the rainbow trout slaughter size and flesh pigmentation to the exact requirements of the various markets.

In freshwater, rainbow trouts can be harvested at any size between 250 g and more than 5 kg, with white or well pigmented red flesh or any shade of red in between depending on the consumers preference.
